Thailand To Accept Displaced Myanmar People

Thailand is preparing to accept Myanmar people who are trying to escape the troubles in their country as attacks by Rohingya Muslim insurgents on government forces comes to a head.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha announced that the country will accept displaced Myanmar people, offer shelter and food, allowing them to return when it is considered safe.

The prime minister did not say if any people had crossed over the border in search of a safe haven, nor did he state, which groups of people would be welcome.

People have also being fleeing to Bangladesh on the north west of Myanmar to avoid being killed in running battles between the Rohingya militants and security forces. Hundreds have been reported to have been killed, mainly insurgents but civilians have died when caught up in the fighting.

Last year over 87,000 people were made homeless after insurgent attacks as the government responded to the moves.

At present Thailand does not recognise the Rohingya people as either refugees or as migrant workers, so it remains to be seen what will happen if Rohingya displaced people arrive at the border.

The United Nations have asked that all nations assist in helping refugees if they cross the borders seeking sanctuary from the troubles.
