New Four Year Visa Announced For Professionals

The Cabinet on Friday, approved a plan to offer skilled professionals and investors four-year visas

The visa, known as the "Smart Visa" will permit people to stay in Thailand with their spouse and children for up to four years, without requiring a work permit. Additionally, holders of the visa, will only have to appear at the immigration offices on an annual basis as opposed to the current 90 days.

Certain rules apply to anyone wishing to obtain the visa however. Applicants must be investors, entrepreneurs, high-level executives or highly skilled professionals, however it is unclear as to what skills would be considered from applicants.

The authorities are hoping that the new visa will permit knowledge transfer and thus increase business growth and deliver economic benefits.
