Girl 10 Gives Birth After Being Raped In India

A ten-year old girl who was raped by her uncle has given birth to a baby girl.

The victim was refused the right to an abortion because she was too far into the pregnancy by the time it was discovered she was with child.

The child gave birth in Chandigarh in northern India. The mother and her baby weighing 2.5kg are said to be doing well.

The girl was not told she was pregnant, when she was taken to see doctors with stomach aches. It was then they found out she was expecting, some seven months after her rape.

She gave birth by caesarean section after being told she had a big stone in her stomach that had to be removed by surgery.

She told police she was raped several times by her uncle, who has since been arrested for his offences.

The Supreme Court ruled that at seven months pregnant an abortion was too risky for the girl.
