The Ten Year Retirement Visa Is Here - Or Is it?

The long wait is over. The ten-year visa for foreigners over the age of 50 can now be obtained in Thailand.

Lt. Gen. Natthathorn Prohsunthorn, the top man at the immigration police made the announcement today, Wednesday 16th of August 2017, however many of the staff appear to be oblivious to the news.

But it seems that the new visa is indeed available but with a number of prerequisites attached to applications.

Firstly it is a two part visa, consisting of two five-year periods. The foreigners must come from one of fourteen nations and they must meet certain financial conditions to be approved.

Apparently the new visas have been available since Friday but no one at immigration appears to be aware of the situation and as a result, there have been no applications.

Natthathorn has asked the press to help promote the new visa and spread the news. He joked that the story is better reading that the ones concerning long queues at airports. We agree with that wholeheartedly.

But staff at the immigration office in Bangkok were not aware of the new visas and referred a reporter to the immigration website, which displays no update concerning ten-year visas to date.

But Natthathorn insisted that a memo was dispatched to the staff but they may not have read it. He suggested that potential applicants should submit their applications.

He continued to discuss the matter stating that applicants must not have any pending criminal charges and have at least three million baht in their bank accounts

There was no mention as to which ten countries are eligible or other stipulations. Nor was any information supplied about the application process.
