Super Car Tax Laws To Be Updated And Dodgers Chased

For those of you who fancy importing a super car, you should be aware that you must pay tax when the cars are brought into Thailand. Many expensive cars are imported into the country but the owners have not paid the required duty, which resulted in a number of vehicles being impounded.

As the Customs Department wants the tax due, the law is about to be amended accordingly and with 200 cars still to have the tax paid on them, they are working closely with the Department of Special Investigations (DSI) in that respect too.

Customs officers are collating data on over 200 cars, which have not had the tax paid when they were imported or in some cases, duties paid were insufficient, so it is up to the DSI to investigate those vehicles and anyone behind the tax evasion, in a bid to collect monies due.

Director-General of the Customs Department Kulis Sombatsiri said "Evidence is available to affirm that almost all of the 200 cars avoided tax when being brought into Thailand."

He also touched on changes in the law to bring them up to date, in order to deal with current issues.

One such change will be in the form of a certified evaluation of the vehicle. This will prevent the importer stating a lower cost for the car and thus reducing the tax due.

A meeting will be held with super car importers to explain the new laws and assure them the government do not wish to damage their businesses but want to see the law upheld and tax paid in accordance with the law.
