New Facebook Video Service Announced
Facebook will be offering a video service that will go up against YouTube and TV networks.
Social media users will be able to view a range of shows via a new "Watch" tab that will appear on the application soon.
Reports suggest that the service will be personalised so that users can discover new items similar to what their friends are viewing.
Company founder Mark Zuckerberg said "Watching a show doesn't have to be passive.
"It can be a chance to share an experience and bring people together who care about the same things."
Up until now, videos on Facebook have been posted by users from YouTube or Facebook Live service or other sources.
Watch could attract investment from TV producers and networks but rest assured, advertisements will be present somewhere along the line.
The service is likely to be available across all platforms, including computers, phones, tablets and even TV applications.
But can the social media giant compete with the likes of YouTube, Netflix or Amazon on the movie, TV and video front? They certainly have the customer base, although the competition is a long way ahead. But if anyone can make it happen, then the people behind Facebook are the ones to do it.
Watch will be released in the USA first of all. If all goes well, it will be rolled out around the globe.
