Fake Bird's Nests Found In Pattaya
Most people who live in or visit Thailand will have seen copious amounts of fake goods on sale, whether it be footballs strips, trainers, branded clothing or Viagra, it can all be located at almost any marketplace. In fact, counterfeit items have even been found in major shopping malls, although the standard will be slightly higher.
But where do you draw the line? Well how about fake food? Yes, fake edibles have been found in Pattaya in the form of bird's nest, often used in the delicacy that is "Bird's Nest Soup".
The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) are investigating a number of restaurants, following complaints of fake bird's nests being sold to tourists.
The DSI, combined with agents from The Department of Local Administration, tourist police and public health officials, have so far inspected nine venues.
There is even a body representing the foodstuff that is being counterfeited involved. The Birds Nest Business Association made a complaint via their former president.
The original offering is made and harvested by swiftlets. The males build their nests over a 35 day period, often in the shape of a shallow cup. They generate their nests from interwoven strands of saliva, which is said to contain high levels of calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium.
The fakes however are made from wood gum and rubber, which, despite claims that the bogus food poses no threat to humans if consumed, it also offers nothing in the form of nutrients.
The damage to Thailand's bird's nest industry could be in the region of four billion baht per annum, should the trend of selling the fabricated product not cease.
The DSI has taken action against several restaurant owners. Anyone found guilty of selling fake food items, could face up to ten years imprisonment and a fine of up to 100,000 baht.
