Old Blind Man Begs To Be Rehoused In Uttaradit
A blind elderly man has appealed to the army for assistance in finding him a new home.
Chuchin Aumpiam, 62, lives alone in his ramshackle house, that he inherited from his mother.
Chuchin who lives in the province of Uttaradit, says that when it rains, water leaks in from the roof and he has to cover himself to stay dry.
Captain Adirek Jai-aree, Chief of the Psychological Warfare Unit of the 35th Army Circle in Uttaradit, visited Chuchin to see the problems for himself.
It was discovered that the man was living alone in an old wooden house, which has a 40 degree tilt. Both the roof and walls let in water and is said to be unsuitable to protect the occupant from the wind and rain. The old fellow explained that he had lived alone for four years since the death of his wife. He said his children, a son and daughter have left home and never visit him.
An incident where cement dust got into his eyes when he worked on a building site, has left him almost blind. He believes an operation could save his sight but he does not have the means to pay for it.
Mr Aumpiam receives just 800 baht per month from a disability pension and 600 baht from his old age pension, which be uses to purchase rice and eggs.
He hopes the army can help him find a suitable home, where he can see out the remainder of his life.
The matter is to be raised with the commander of the 35th Army Circle.
The kind-hearted captain, presented the man with 6,500 baht, with 1,500 coming from his own pocket. The other 5,000 was broken down as follows:
2,000 baht emergency money to help a person in need , 1,000 baht for an elderly person in urgent need and 2,000 was from the Uttaradit Social Development and Human Security Office.
Based on his current income, Chuchin will feel like he has won the lottery.
However, no one should have to live in squalid conditions such as he is enduring, so let's hope the powers that be, find him a decent home and maybe his children could pay their father a visit.
