City Speed Limits Could Be Reduced In Thailand

Following on from today's death toll figures on Thai roads story, which reveals inconceivable numbers dying on the nation's roads this year, we may be about to see the government reduce speed limits on city roads.

The current speed limit is 80 kph but plans are afoot to reduce this to 40, to fall in line with the likes of Japan.

The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning made the announcement via Director Chaiwat Thongkhamkoon today.

He pointed out that Thailand had the highest city speed limit in Asia, where the average is around 40-60 kph.

However, unlike many new laws, this one will not occur overnight and could in fact take up to a year to implement.

Thailand has the second highest road accident rate in the world, according to the World Health Organisation. This year so far, almost 8000 people have died on the roads, with many calling for the government to take action, to reduce the serious waste of life.
