Thai Badminton Star Wins New Zealand Open
Thailand's badminton star Ratchanok Intanon defeated Saena Kawakami of Japan to win the New Zealand Open on Sunday.
Intanon, 22, won the match by two sets to one in a hard fought encounter. She took the first set 21-14 before losing the second as Kawakami levelled, taking the set by 16-21.
Both players gave their all in the third but it was the Thai, who claimed the title winning the final set by 21-15.
Thailand's heroine, added the New Zealand Open to her victory in the Thailand Open in June.
Intanon, was the first Thai to become the number one in women's singles in 2013. She can also lay claim to being the youngest ever champion of the BWF World Junior Championships at the age of 14, in 2009.
In 2013, she won the World Championship. In total she has lifted 16 major titles in her career so far plus three consecutive World Junior Championships.
