There Is Light At The End Of The Tunnel At Last
Hooray!! The Pattaya Tunnel is set to open in August.
Yes it is true. The long procrastination over the opening of the Pattaya Tunnel is over.
Officials at a press conference announced the tunnel will open for public use on August 25th.
The tunnel has had so many delays that many believed it would never be ready but it appears that the 840 million baht project will finally see use.
But as always, there is a twist with the postponed tunnel opening as local authorities say they have still not managed to find a team of "experts" to operate the so called "complicated" management system. Nevertheless, the tunnel has the go-ahead.
The project was given clearance by Pattaya Mayor Anan Charoenchasri, according to spokesman Phinit Maneerat, who was speaking with the tunnel's Chief Engineer Sunthorn Sompramai at his side.
Construction began back in 2014 and has seen numerous delays. It was at one point indicated that it would open for Songkran but that failed to materialise. Then it was announced the tunnel was complete and ready to go into operation but they did not have the skills required to manage the internal emergency systems and again delays followed.
Then it underwent repairs before a vehicle had driven into its depths.
The local authorities have said the builders will operate the tunnel, until suitable staff are recruited and trained.
Put it in your diary folks. August 25th is the big day!
