Tax Increase On Cigarettes And Booze Coming Soon

Cigarettes and alcohol are set to go up in price as the government plan to increase tax on them to provide for the nation's elderly, who fall into the "poor" category.

A two percent increase seems inevitable in what has been called "Sin Taxes".

Thailand's population is living longer and as a result, many are struggling to make ends meet. The plan is to tax certain products and raise around four billion baht in excise duty to help alleviate the problem.

It is said that an estimated 3.5 million senior citizens across the country, are under the poverty line. At present the government handouts are insufficient and something has to be done.

Like in most countries around the world, it is alcohol and cigarettes that take the hit, mainly because it is the easiest method of raising funds for governments.
