The King Of Thailand Requests Relief Centre In Stricken Northern Province
His Majesty the King has requested a flood relief centre be set up in the stricken Sakon Nakhon Province of Thailand, to assist in distributing food and necessities. Residents in the province have suffered more than most as storms and incessant rains battered the region, leaving many without homes and even basic drinking water.
Province Governor Thawat Siriwattananukul responded stating that the residents were truly appreciative of the King's concerns, advice and help afforded to them.
The flooding is said to be the worst witnessed in the region for 80 years and is thought to have caused over one billion baht in damage to property, businesses and crops.
Prasat Dongsiri, a local businessman said the flooding had brought severe damage to shops, hotels and residences, adding it is worse than the floods of 1974.
He continued to explain that the problem lay in the infrastructure's inability to drain the water away. He suggested that the province has developed so fast over the years but drainage had failed to evolve at the same speed.
The heavy downpours began on Wednesday and were relentless, resulting in floods throughout the region. It was estimate that the damage could take weeks to repair.
Our thoughts are with those suffering in the region.
