Record Heroine Haul On Ship In Indian Waters
A huge haul of heroine has been seized from a ship in India of the coast of Gujarat.
Indian authorities found 1,500kg (3,300lb) on board a merchant ship worth an incredible $550m (£420m), with a spokesperson stating "It was the largest single haul of narcotics to date".
The vessel and its crew have been taken into custody.
The seagoing route is renowned for its drug smuggling trade, due to its close vicinity to Afghanistan, the world's largest producer of opium, which heroine is derived from.
Heroine addiction costs the world's nations a fortune. In the state of Punjab in India alone, it is estimated that almost 900,000 men are users of the drugs and some 53% have an addiction problem.
