Careful When You Take Those Selfies
When is it acceptable to post an image online featuring you holding a drink containing alcohol?
This is the latest news coming from a variety of sources who say it is illegal for someone to post even a "selfie" if they are drinking beer for instance.
However, the Department of Disease Control have stated that an image is permissible, so long as it is not for advertising purposes. If there is any hidden agenda such as to promote alcohol, you could find yourself in trouble with the authorities.
The problem has arisen because some police officers have been taking action against social media users, who post or share images of themselves or friends who are holding alcoholic drinks. You know the sort of image - ones taken at a party or other social occasion.
However, the Department of Disease Control suggest that the police should take into consideration what the intentions of the person who uploaded the photos were.
Could they simply be showing their Facebook friends that they are having a great time in the "land of smiles" for instance?
It also seems that if you are a celebrity, you must never be seen to post a photograph containing alcohol, in case you influence others.
Anyone convicted of breaching the laws on advertising alcohol could face one year imprisonment and/or a 500,000 baht fine.
Compare this to the paltry fines issued to driver's who have no licence or are under the influence of alcohol and it makes you wonder who is coming up with the laws and the consequences.
Common sense is required for many holidaymakers will take images in bars and clubs as they socialise or even have a drink in their condo or hotel.
Of course we are 100% behind anything that promotes safe use of alcohol or warns of the dangers of abusing any substance that is addictive of may cause health issues. Drink sensible folks.
