Forbidden Jobs For Foreigners Under Review
Thailand's Labour Ministry have conceded that its laws on jobs that foreign workers can do, may be out of date and in need of revising.
There are 39 occupations in the Kingdom, that are reserved solely for Thai nationals. These include labourers, driving, farm workers, most construction work such as bricklaying or joinery, hairdressing and legal work. Workers from Cambodia and Laos however, appear to be permitted to work as labourers.
These 39 positions are now under review, which may be good news for people wishing to come to Thailand in a hope of finding work.
It is fair to say that many of the roles on the forbidden list were not often sought by Thai people.
The hope is that easing the laws on foreign workers, could help bring new investors to the country.
The possibility of foreign construction workers joining the ranks of the workforce in Thailand may not be that far away.
It is unclear if the new rules will be aimed specifically at workers from Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos or if European workers would be welcomed to apply for vacancies, once the review is complete.
The authorities are currently running an amnesty period for illegal foreign works, to give them a chance to register. The period of freedom runs until January 2018.
