Parasailing Suspended In Phuket

Phuket has suspended parasailing activities following the fatal accident involving Australian Roger Hussey, 71, who plummeted from 70 metres.

Mr. Hussey survived the fall but died shortly afterwards.

The move is to allow time for various governing bodies and those who work in the industry to discuss how to improve the safety aspects of parasailing. The boat and its operators appeared to have been properly registered with the marine office but because parasailing is regarded as a sport, they have limited jurisdiction over those working in the trade.

Early the two operators were reportedly being held in jail as investigations were continuing into the incident but the pair claim, the fault lies with the victim, who released himself from his harness.

Parasailing is very popular around the coastline of Thailand including Pattaya, where scores of people enjoy the activity on a daily basis.
