Bangkok Electricity Cables To Be Underground In Four Years
New visitors to Thailand are often shocked at some of the things they see upon arrival in the "land of smiles". Simply departing the airport in a taxi, will have many wondering how the road system works, as cars overtake on either side of you, motorbikes drive against the traffic and on the pavements and U-Turns on motorways are commonplace and rather frightening for the new visitor. Once you are in a major city or town, such as Pattaya or indeed the capital city, Bangkok, you cannot help but observe the miles of spaghetti cabling that travels from pole to pole carrying electricity, internet and phone cables. It is a horrendous site that brings ridicule to the nation.
However, that may be about to change as the governor of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) has assured the public that all power cables in Bangkok will be underground by the year 2021.
This is great news but can the MEA really achieve this in four years?
MEA Governor Chaiyong Puapongsakorn said they had already placed up to 42 kilometres of cables underground in major business areas.
Of course it would make sense to relocate all communications cables at the same time as the power cables but that will require the companies working in unison.
People took to social media to poke fun at the claims that work will be completed in four years, claiming that the plans are optimistic to say the least.
Let us hope that the MEA are successful and that Pattaya and other towns and cities are encompassed into this plan and the unsightly cables will disappear forever.
