Could Trams Soon Be Introduced To Pattaya?

Pattaya's economy and transport could be about to get a massive boost in the form of a brand new transport system as talks of introducing "trams" to the city are being touted by local officials.

A meeting chaired by Pattaya's mayor was held last week, where it was suggested that a tram system could provide the city with the answer to its transport woes.

The officials also believe that such a project could get underway without government funding, as they would seek investment from the private sector.

A tram system in Pattaya would be a wonderful asset to the tourist orientated city and would also go a long way to helping resolve the area's traffic issues.

The initial plan would be to put buses on the routes the trams would utilise, so that the public became accustomed to the public service vehicles being around.

There are of course a few obstacles that would have to be overcome. Such as, would the local population adhere to the traffic laws required for a tram system to operate? Let's be honest, they are not the most patient drivers in the world and having to give way to a tram may be asking a lot.

Others are sceptical following the "Pattaya Tunnel" debacle, which is way over schedule and still has no fixed date of becoming operational, despite being complete.

There would also be objections from baht bus and taxi owners to consider.

But if the problems of introducing a tram system can be overcome, there is no doubt that it would be a major boost to Pattaya and its economy.

Where would it run to and from? Possibly from Jomtien to North Pattaya would be an ideal first choice, making use of Pattaya Second Road and Beach Road. There are a lot of ifs and buts to consider and it is an ambitious plan. Let us hope those in power, make the correct decisions.

Maybe we could see trams decorated in lights at certain times of the year? Blackpool of Asia!
