Thailand To Bid For 2034 FIFA World Cup

Brazil v Germany 2014

Thailand are to bid to co-host the 2034 FIFA World Cup along with neighbours Myanmar and Indonesia. The bid should be confirmed by the Asean Football Federation in September, 2017.

The tender is ambitious to say the least but it is one that could put Thailand firmly on the map in footballing terms at least.

The original plan was put together by the Malaysian Football Association but they have since decided to withdraw from the bidding, however, Singapore is reportedly interested in joining the three other nations .

The World Cup is of course the jewel in the crown of football international tournaments and if the bid was successful, it would reap huge rewards for the nations involved.

The biggest problem lies with the Infrastructure of the proposed participants but with seventeen years to prepare, they have an abundance of time to be ready, with the deadline for applicants being 2026.

South Korea and Japan have successfully hosted the 2002 World Cup, which saw Brazil beat Germany in Yokohama, Japan, in front of almost 70,000 people.

No other Asian nation has hosted the tournament since its inauguration in 1930.

Brazil of course held the last World Cup in 2014, which Germany won.

Thailand were part of a four nation unit that hosted the 2007 Asian Cup, which provided the country with some valuable experience of hosting a prestige competition.

Let us hope that Thailand can deliver the proposal and maybe even build an international team that can grace such a platform. It would be fair to say that the people of Thailand would endorse a glamour event on their soil.
